A Bergen Diary

Praneet Soi

In 2021, Praneet Soi will live and work for six months in the former studio of artist Lucebert in Bergen, the Lucebert House. During walks through the vast forest and dune area around Bergen, he will search for the genius loci: the soul of the place.

Artist Praneet Soi will be staying at the Luceberthuis in Bergen for a six-month working period in 2021. The Luceberthuis is located in the former home and studio of visual artist and poet Lucebert (1924–1994). During this stay, Soi will not only be working in the studio. Equally important are the walks he takes through the dunes and forests in the surrounding area, searching for the genius loci, or spirit of the place.

He incorporates the experiences and impressions he gains during his walks and his stay in Lucebert’s studio into a series of paintings, composed of both figurative and abstract elements: nature interwoven with pattern and motif. A Bergen Diary is a total installation of painted representations and the video film Entanglements, which Soi made especially for this presentation. The Bergen landscape, the conversations he had with various people there, and Soi’s own archive of images from various sources merge into an experimental video.

Praneet Soi (Kolkata, 1971) lives and works in Amsterdam and exhibits worldwide. His work is included in collections in Europe and India, including the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi, The Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, the Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
