It all began in Bergen. The artists’ village owes much to the innovative spirit of the artists who settled here at the beginning of the twentieth century. They sought out nature, the sealight, and each other, made friends, and exhibited together.
It started in Bergen
After the Second World War, painters and poets from this vanguard, including Charley Toorop and Adriaan Roland Holst, championed the establishment of an artists’ association. In 1947, the KunstenaarsCentrumBergen (KCB) was established. The exhibition “It Began in Bergen” pays tribute to these pioneers and features works from the museum’s collection by Charley Toorop, Jaap Weijand, Piet Wiegman, Matthieu Wiegman, Dirk Filarski, and Johannes Graadt van Roggen. Portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, their favorite themes, are featured.
Famous Former Members
The members of the KCB are represented by more than 120 works of art in the exhibition, which fills all the galleries of Kranenburgh. A kaleidoscope of disciplines, techniques, and materials allows you to experience the unique interaction between the artists and the artistic climate in Bergen and the surrounding region. Famous former members such as Lucebert and Constant, as well as honorary members Kees de Kort and Gerard van der Leeden, are represented. In the old building, the KCB exhibits work by members who drew inspiration from the Bergen School.
