Blues Before Sunrise

Iris Kensmil

Museum Kranenburgh presents Iris Kensmil, who represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 2019 together with Remy Jungerman.

Black Emancipation

Iris Kensmil (born 1970) lives and works in Amsterdam and has exhibited her paintings and drawings in recent years at venues including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Van Abbemuseum, and the Centraal Museum Utrecht. She introduces us to authors, philosophers, activists, and musicians associated with the Black emancipation movement. In this way, she aims to paint a more complete picture of the past, essential for imagining a future.

Blues Before Sunrise emphasizes the personal nature of Iris Kensmil’s work by showcasing the breadth of her themes, perspectives, and working methods. The social component is essential to her work, but—as in Venice—the immediate impression is one of a painterly representation of diverse stories and multiple identities.

This exhibition is made possible in part by the Mondriaan Fund.
The publication “Iris Kensmil – Blues Before Sunrise” is made possible in part by the Niemeijer Fund Foundation.
