Greetings from Bergen

Chilling at Charley's

This summer, two exhibitions are being held featuring works from the museum’s own collection: paintings, drawings, and photographs by artists including Eva Besnyö, Charley Toorop, and Leo Gestel. Donations, (self-)portraits, and landscapes are also on display; favorites of the Bergen School and subsequent generations.

Greetings from Bergen

Several works have never been shown before, including the recently donated Self-Portrait by Germ de Jong. The painting “The Three Generations” by Charley Toorop is also on display, featuring John Raedecker’s image of Jan Toorop’s head. Raedecker’s work is also featured in the exhibition.

Chilling at Charley’s

Where did Charley Toorop’s artist friends work? And what did they do in their free time? Thanks to the beautiful photographs of Eva Besnyö (1910-2003), we no longer need to speculate. They drank copious amounts of tea on the lawn and ate together, as can be seen in the exhibition “Chilling at Charley’s.” Eva Besnyö took the photographs from 1916 onward, the years when Charley Toorop (1891-1955) lived in her home/studio De Vlerken in Bergen. The photo of John Raedecker working on Jan Toorop’s head is particularly noteworthy.
