In her intimate portraits, photographer Cuny Janssen reveals different forms of connection.

Exhibition space 2, 3, 4

Since 2000, Cuny Janssen (NL, 1975) has been traveling around the world to photograph children and their surrounding landscapes. In her photos, she records places or regions and the people who live there. In The Binding Factor, she presents her latest work: portraits of children with their adult relationships—photos she took in her own living environment over the past few years—and a number of landscapes.

Janssen’s latest portraits reveal her interest in family structures and what they look like today. In modern families – blended, interracial, with different religions, rainbow families – traditional roles and functions continue to exist. There are still fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, grandparents and friends, even in blended and extended families. Coexistence, fluidity, and acceptance of others are more central today. In her portraits, Cuny Janssen makes these different forms of connection visible. In particular, she focuses on the dignity of the human being as an individual, with a character and ideas of their own.

A publication has been issued for the exhibition: Cuny Janssen THE BINDING FACTOR. Published by andriesse eyck publications, 2023.
