Mission
Museum Kranenburgh, founded in 1993, is the guardian of the cultural heritage of the municipality of Bergen and is responsible for preserving the objects that bear witness to this heritage and presenting them in an insightful way to a broad, national audience. The museum develops exhibitions and programs featuring modern and contemporary art that exude creative freedom, experimentation, and engagement, and reflect on nature. Situated amidst forests, dunes, and polders, the Kranenburgh “museum in the green” naturally draws attention in its programs to the deep connection between humanity and nature.
Through its activities, Museum Kranenburgh aims to explore and highlight the cultural spirit and tradition of Bergen in various ways and from a (inter)national perspective, allowing children, young people, and adults to discover the value of creativity and culture and to become acquainted with Bergen’s unique history. It aims to inject new impetus into the relationship between artists, art, viewers, and society, and to offer a generous platform for reflection, exchange, and collaboration. The museum aims to optimally fulfill its social role as a facilitator of meaningful leisure activities for individuals and groups – locally, regionally, and nationally – in an inspiring and safe environment. By inspiring, activating, and facilitating, Museum Kranenburgh aims to shape and give meaning to the world.
Vision and Objectives
Museum Kranenburgh connects art, culture, and nature in an inspiring environment. Based on Bergen’s rich cultural tradition and with an eye for contemporary developments, the museum’s program focuses on both local and (inter)national artistic expressions and connects them. Bergen’s collection and cultural-historical tradition, the natural environment in which the museum is located, and current/urgent social themes form the substantive foundations of Museum Kranenburgh’s exhibition and activity program.
Museum Kranenburgh aims to continue developing, exhibiting, and sharing high-quality art and culture in the broadest sense of the word and at a (inter)national level. It wants to further develop as an open and hospitable place where everyone can actively experience art, and in doing so, it attaches great importance to accessibility and customer friendliness. In the coming years, the museum wants to further develop its sustainable entrepreneurship – both ecologically and socially. It aims to reach and involve increasingly diverse groups of people – and younger audiences in particular – in active art and culture experiences, regardless of their cultural, social or ethnic background, and with an eye for a balanced male-female-x ratio. The museum wants to consolidate and further professionalize its role as an educational hub for primary and secondary education. To this end, the museum actively seeks collaboration with other cultural and social partners, both locally, regionally and nationally.
