Bergen photographer

Lines and shapes
Bastiaan Woudt’s work is instantly recognizable by its black-and-white images. According to the photographer, color only distracts from the image. The graphic power of photography, the lines, shapes, and textures, are better appreciated without color, according to Woudt. For him, that is the essence of photography. A black-and-white image takes away a piece of reality and at the same time adds a new dimension. Woudt is therefore not looking for a realistic representation of a place, person, or object. He wants to ‘take’ the viewer into an image and let them discover their own ideas and feelings.
Personal signature
It is primarily his studio work that has brought Woudt international recognition in recent years. The iconic and timeless portraits, in which clear lines and circular objects make the work ‘a true Bastiaan Woudt’, emphasize that his images revolve around form, structure, and materiality. He also focuses on form, structure, and materiality in his travel photography. However, Woudt’s working method during these trips is completely different from that in his studio. He often has only a few seconds to capture an image, whereas in the studio he can experiment endlessly. InTwist, Museum Kranenburgh brings together Woudt’s studio work and travel photography. Although the two genres are created in completely different circumstances, they undeniably bear his signature. Inspired by analog photography, Woudt creates images that evoke a sense of nostalgia and are at the same time unmistakably his own work.
