Turbulent times through the eyes of artists, fashion designers and designers – a hundred years ago and today.
The Roaring Twenties
1920 vs. 2020
Roaring dance parties, women in men’s suits, Josephine Baker, and Bauhaus: these are images that evoke the 1920s or Roaring Twenties. But also: the rise of fascism amidst the ruins of war and a global pandemic – the Spanish flu. Now, a hundred years later, we find ourselves once again in a turbulent decade.
In this exhibition, guest curators Colin Huizing, Liesbeth in ‘t Hout, and Wieki Somers (Studio Wieki Somers) look back and forward to the 1920s through art, fashion, and design. What are the hopes of the artists of then and now? Are there parallels? How do they capture the spirit of the times? The exhibition allows us to look through the eyes of some 60 leading contemporary and historical artists, designers, and fashion designers at a world changing rapidly under the influence of technological progress, social engagement, and a new perspective on gender and emancipation.
Turbulent Times
The period between the two world wars was a turbulent one, during which numerous dogmas and traditions were being challenged. Painters abstracted and distorted reality, or even radically broken with it. Fashion became more comfortable, daring, and less stereotyped. Technological advances allowed designers to experiment with new forms and materials.
Although the 2020s have only just begun, we already know that “our” 2020s will also be remembered as a period of change; a time of a global pandemic, climate change, political unrest, and social reassessment. Now, in 2021, society seems to yearn for liberation just as it did a hundred years ago. New ideas about society seem to be cautiously taking hold. Like the innovators of that time, today’s artists are driven by a deep sense of commitment. They are concerned about the fate of the world, critically examine the prevailing power dynamics, and break with existing traditions.
Side Program
The exhibition features an extensive side program with lectures, music, workshops, and festive events (provided they are permitted due to COVID-19), some of which are in collaboration with art venues in the municipality of Bergen. Up-to-date information will be posted on this website.
"The parties were bigger. The pace was faster, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, and the liquor was cheaper." F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, 1925.
