In Momentum of Light, internationally acclaimed photographer Iwan Baan (NL, 1975) presents a selection from his 2021 photo series taken in Burkina Faso, West Africa. At its core, the work explores the interplay between traditional Burkinabe architecture, the lives it shapes, and the daily cycle of sunlight.

Baan’s fascination with architecture leads him to adopt the approach of a documentary photographer. As such, his focus is less on the architectural language of form and more on how the sun’s blistering presence or deep absence influences everyday life in homes, workshops, and places of worship. Momentum of Light is Iwan Baan’s first solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands and honours a way of building and living that is rooted in the synergy between people and nature.
